About Midway Airport
Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW) is a key gateway to Chicago, Illinois, located just about 8 miles southwest of downtown. Originally opened in 1927 as Chicago Municipal Airport, it was renamed Midway in 1949 to honor the Battle of Midway from World War II.
The airport primarily serves domestic flights and is a major hub for Southwest Airlines. Midway offers a range of amenities, including dining and shopping options, and is well-connected to the city via the CTA Orange Line.
With recent modernization efforts enhancing passenger experience, Midway remains one of the busiest airports in the United States, providing a more accessible alternative to the larger O’Hare International Airport. Chicago itself has a population of approximately 2.7 million people, making it the third-largest city in the United States.
