About Indianapolis IN
Indianapolis was founded in 1821 and was named the capital of Indiana in 1825. Its strategic location at the intersection of major transportation routes earned it the nickname “Crossroads of America.”
The city’s growth was fueled by the arrival of railroads in the 19th century. It became a major industrial center, producing automobiles, aircraft, and other manufactured goods. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway was built in 1909, and the first Indianapolis 500 race was held in 1911.
