About Elkhart IN
Elkhart, Indiana, was founded in 1832. Its name was derived from an island in the St. Joseph River that resembled an elk’s heart. The town’s early economy was based on agriculture and small-scale manufacturing.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Elkhart’s economy began to shift towards manufacturing, particularly the production of carriages and wagons. This industry thrived until the advent of the automobile, which led to a decline in the carriage industry.
However, Elkhart’s manufacturing sector was not doomed. In the mid-20th century, the city became a major center for the production of recreational vehicles (RVs). This industry continues to be a significant driver of Elkhart’s economy today, earning the city the nickname “RV Capital of the World.”
Elkhart has also played a role in the music industry. The city was once home to several piano manufacturers, earning it the nickname “Piano Capital of the World.” While the piano industry has declined in recent years, Elkhart’s legacy in music continues to be celebrated through its annual Piano Festival.
